CPLA Counselors provide one-on-one mental health counseling to support students experiencing difficulties
CPLA counselors are a trusted and capable source of support for the entire school community. They create partnerships with students, parents and teachers to help students achieve their goals. They work with parents to improve communication and provide interventions and guidance. They promote student success in the classroom by focusing on the critical connection between a student’s mental health and their ability to effectively take advantage of opportunities to learn. Counselors empower students to become their own advocates.
During counseling sessions counselors utilize a variety of evidence-based practices to:
- Improve communication and coping skills
- Strengthen students’ sense of self, self-esteem and self-efficacy
- Promote positive behavior changes
- Identify goals and effective paths to achieve them
- Help parents to support their children’s needs
- Emotionally process and grieve loss and painful family changes
